Since completing his Welcome to Paradise tour, fans won’t have to wait that much longer before Cody Simpson hits the road again. The Adorable Aussie has signed on to open for Nickelodeon dreamboats Big Time Rush on select dates of their upcoming Big Time Summer Tour, increasing the need for on-site paramedics at medium-sized venues around the country. Though likely tired from a whirlwind promotional tour of his own, Simpson seems excited to get back at it; he and BTR member Carlos Pena traded bromantical tweets following Tuesday’s announcement, which should further fans’ desire for goofy backstage videos like this throughout the summer voyage.

The Big Time Summer Tour kicks off July 5 in Columbus, Ohio, and will hit 50 cities across the U.S. and Canada through September. Along with Simpson, X Factor finalist Rachel Crow will serve as opening act on certain dates. We’ve already been privy to the extreme reactions BTR can cause by just showing up places, so pairing the boys with the originator of the “side-swept surfer ‘do” should introduce us to new levels of high-pitched screaming. And with so much cuteness on one stage, when will one be able to sneak off for a bathroom break? Tickets to this summer’s shows go on sale March 10, with more opening acts to be announced. Cody Simpson, the “Adorable Aussie” as we call him, has agreed to give Popdust the low-down on life on the road during his “Waiting for Paradise” tour: The good, the bad, and the breakfast. We’ll be speaking to Cody on the phone and turning his words into daily tour diary entries. We peered into a hectic tour day in Day One and a more relaxed tour day in Day Two. In this, the third and final installment, we see a day that is somewhere in between the two. Crashing weather reports, flirting with Atlanta beauties, and entertaining celebrity guests – All in a day’s work for Cody Simpson.

Thursday, February 23rd

8:00 AM

I woke up and had school. I did a lot of mathematics. I don’t like mathematics. And chemistry. No test tubes or anything, it’s all on my laptop, so I don’t have to carry any books. I have a tutor with me, she’s very nice, very chill. She’s not too tough, but a reasonable grader. Like, if I say something that’s wrong, she’s not gonna say that it’s right. Too bad, that, eh?

I had breakfast somewhere in there. Not Special K, if you believe it! Cheerios. NO, WAIT. Toast. With jam. Not ketchup. I’m growing up, I guess.

10:00 AM

After that, we were invited to The Weather Channel in Atlanta. They saw me crashing that weather report and asked me to come in and, like, let me be a weatherman for a bit. It is my other pastime, my fallback career. (Don’t quit your day job.) I did and interview, then I read the weather report from Australia. Mild, temperate climate there. So, I crashed another weather report! It’s what I do best.

12:00 PM

We had lunch at Willy’s Mexicana Grill. Chicken burrito. No cheese, no guac. I always ask for extra rice. I prefer 20-30 more grains than the normal person. 36 is fine. Jokes.

2:00 PM

After lunch, I went to the Ryan Seacrest Foundation at the Atlanta Children’s Hospital. I like anytime I can go somewhere and make people smile. The kids in these hospitals are in a stressful situation that they didn’t ask to be put in, so I make sure I bring smiles. Taking pictures, visiting, chatting. I love making their moms happy, really.

4:00

Then, we went to the venue – Center Stage in Atlanta. Did a soundcheck. A little rap this time. I only rap for the band. Listen, I can rap well, but I just don’t wanna do it for anyone. (I guess I just don’t wanna have to prove it…)

We had a VIP meet-n-greet at the venue. I realized something very important: Girls in Atlanta are really beautiful. Like, really beautiful. Like, I was stunned by their beauty. Ok, moving on.

I went backstage and started warming up, stretching, in my tour robe of course.

7:45 PM

Honestly, it was one of the best shows of the tour so far. The venue was nice, the crowd was awesome, sold out. Also, I had a lot of executives there. I don’t really get nervous to perform in front of them, but I just wanted to make sure I put on a cool show. Oh! James Brown’s family came out for the show. His grandchildren, everything. It was an honor. You know, every couple of days, it hits me how lucky I am and how cool this is. The fact that James Brown’s family was there and in awe of the show after having seen the best performers in the world? Too cool.

My favorite song to do in my shows right now is [my upcoming single] “So Listen.” It’s not out yet, so the fans go crazy. I can’t wait to release it officially this week!

9:00 PM

I put on my robe immediately after the show, as is habit. I chilled in the dressing room, had time to calm myself down. Then I came back to the bus and chilled for a little while. My tour manager, Jeff, brought me a nice vanilla milkshake. No Harry Potter tonight, alas.

People ask me all the time, “If you could trade places with anyone in the world, who would it be?” Honestly, I wouldn’t trade places with anyone in the world. I wanna keep working hard and finish my business. If I weren’t singing? I’d be swimming competitively. It was my life before I started singing. I was actually Australian champion for my age a couple years before moving to the states. I was training twice a day and really enjoyed it. Butterfly stroke, all the way.

I won’t quit my day job though and become a weatherman or a swimmer. I just love my fans. Wouldn’t be here without them. I appreciate their support every single day. I hope they know that.

Wednesday, February 22nd

EVA LONGORIA TWEETED AT ME.

Ok, I’ll get to that later. I didn’t have a show yesterday, so it was a day to chill. And eat. I woke up feeling great, not sick anymore. I had my Special K again, it’s my morning habit. No berries this time! I eat too many berries, I might turn into one.

I went to the gym for a little while – A lot of upper body work. I’m a little sore. But, you know, I keep on going. My security guard Jeffrey Traynor is also a personal trainer. He posted a picture of my protein drinks with carrots and sharpies [to his Instagram]. Not sure what the deal is there…

We went to a nice lunch at a cafe in Charlotte. Had a nice wrap, a nice protein shake to go with it. Replenishing after my work you, you know. Had a nice dinner too with all the tour dudes, my sister, my family, all 20 of us. Pasta Pomodoro. But enough about food…

…Okay one more thing about food. Ketchup makes everything better. I put it on a lot of things. I put it on my salad. There, I said it. The weirdest thing I’ve put ketchup on is strawberries. Very nice flavors actually, though I don’t think I’d go back there again. I’ll try it with watermelon next, I think. Ketchup makes life more delightful, doesn’t it?

My sister’s about two feet away from me at the moment. She’s not allowed any closer. Just kidding (kinda). We barely have arguments, but I monitor her boyfriend situation very closely. She’s allowed to see people, but I like to intimidate them. When she’s chilling with them, I like to screw around with them. Make sure they’re not fast. Or suspicious. Y’know, make sure they’re well-mannered gentlemen, good enough men for my beautiful sister. All of my upper body work will surely intimidate them.

Last night, Jessica [Jarrell, my tour mate] and I continued watching Harry Potter. We’re on the 5th. She’s into it. We’re just friends, for the record. I’m single. I love having my family on the road with me, but it can get lonely. No women in my life right now, but I always talk about what a crush I have on Eva Longoria. And Jessica Alba. I don’t have posters of them on the bus or anything. I just think they’re very, very beautiful that’s all.

SO, out of nowhere, Eva tweeted at me AND retweeted another person’s tweet about me. I was like, “What happened?! What did I do?!” Maybe I should tweet at Jessica Alba…

I’m a little sore from my work-out right now, but, you know, if I’m gunna get a girl like Eva…

In this first of three installments, we peer into the nitty-gritty of a typical manic Monday for the Adorable Aussie.

Monday, February 20th

Yesterday was Monday, yeah? Oh boy.

6:00 AM

I woke up in Washington D.C. on my tour bus bunk. I was not in a very good mood because I’d just recovered from being sick. I was real sick for 3 or 4 days and woke up with a bit of a sore throat. It’s always worse in the morning. Also, I was up pretty late the night before. I’m not sure how much sleep I actually got. I’m on tour with Jessica Jarrell (a very talented up-and-coming R&B artist and one of my best friends in the states) who has never seen the Harry Potter series, so I was showing her a little bit of that. It was fun; waking up was not.

6:15 AM

Breakfast. I have breakfast as soon as I wake up. I had Special K. I put fruit in it too – Strawberries and blueberries. When you’re out on the road, eating healthy is essential. Also, I don’t love Vegemite. I know that’s not very Australian of me, but I prefer a jam or a peanut butter.

8:00 AM

I had a morning TV appearance, D.C.’s Morning Talk Show or something like that. The TV performance was great; I previewed my single “So Listen.” It was a pretty regular.

WAIT. No. Now that I remember. I went through the motions of performing and interviewing, but we had 15 extra minutes. After a more serious story, during the ad break, I asked if I could crash the weather report. I did and it was hilarious. It come out on YouTube and all my fans lost it. I think I found my other calling yesterday…

9:00 AM

We drove to a mall in Virginia for a signing and meet-and-greet. It was crazy. Mayhem. 1000 people came Sunday to win 200 passes for the event, and 2000 people without passes still showed up. It’s impossible to make everyone happy, I know a lot of artists can relate. I love meeting my fans. Good time. Thankfully nothing out of the ordinary, like old guys showing up with cameras to sell photos on, like, eBay. I don’t like speaking bad about anyone, but it’s like, “Woah, what are you doing here?” It’s just something that mildly bugs me.

We finished that, and drove back to the bus. I wrote a song actually. I haven’t had much time to work on anything. I just get certain little inspirations, certain little sparks. Not related to Special K this time, though.

11:00 AM

Then we went to soundcheck. My band is so incredible; they can play anything. Sometimes, if we have time, we’ll play a Kanye West, a Jay-Z, a Drake to hype me up. I like to rap. Good time.

12:00 PM

Lunch. Chicken roll from Subway. It was a footlong, so I guess it was $5? I love that jingle. I wrote it. Joking.

2:00 PM

V.I.P. meet-and-greet at the venue, the Filmore Silver Spring in Maryland. 50 people. I like to make sure they all have a great experience. I sign posters and t-shirts, and they get a bundle of gear. I love picking a couple fans to give some special attention. This one girl came up and asked if she could rap, so I put her on the spot. Got everyone’s attention – my manager, my sister, everyone – and she rapped Nicki Minaj (I think “Super Bass?”). It was so fun. I can’t believe people cry when they see me. I’d say about 1 in every, like, 10 person will come along with some tears.

3:30 PM

Yesterday’s show was a matinee at 5, so I had an hour-and-a-half to just chill. Actually, I have a robe that I put on. My tour robe. I wear it every night before and after the show. Just to relax myself. It’s almost like a mental thing. It’s navy, very simple, a very simple Ralph Lauren robe.

I had an hour before the show to stretch, warm up, drink some tea, listen to music. Then I put my suit on and I’m ready to go. A navy velvet blazer. Is navy my color? I think so. I want everything I do and every look to be a very classy, fitted look. I think it’s cool because I’m young and people don’t expect me to dress like that.

6:00 PM

I’m usually offstage a little before 9 in a regular situation, but since this was a matinee, I got offstage before 6. Very great show. We’ve been on tour for a couple weeks and have perfected every aspect of the performance. No mishaps or funny business last night, fortunately.

I went straight to the bus, put my robe back on, freshened up a little bit, and had dinner. Steak and vegetables. Delicious.

Jess and I watched more Harry Potter and then I hit my bunk. No tour pranks yet. In the future? Hopefully.
